Barcelona, Inter Milan interested in exit-bound World Cup finalist – Romano

Argentina’s quest to become Bicampeon ended in heartbreak as they lost out to Spain in extra-time.

It was a tough one to swallow for Cristian Romero, who had been one of the best-performing players for Argentina in the tournament, offering leadership and solidity at the back.

Romero’s performances, though, have not gone unnoticed and the player is expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, claims Fabrizio Romano.

Romero adds that Barcelona are among the clubs interested in the services of Romero this summer, as they look to shore up their ranks in defence.

The transfer expert explains that Romero is fully expected to depart Tottenham once the tournament concludes.

With his international commitments now over, fresh talks are anticipated between the player’s camp and Spurs to determine the terms of his exit, with the clear plan being for him to move on.

Inter Milan are also said to be keen on the services of the Argentina international.

Meanwhile, the Catalans would only be in a position to pursue Romero if they first offload one of their own central defenders, freeing up both the finances and the squad space required.

Romano adds that these are the two clubs currently in the frame, though he does not rule out more suitors joining the race.

While Romero is undoubtedly a top-class defender, there are genuine question marks over whether he is the right profile for Barcelona’s specific needs.

The most pressing requirement in Hansi Flick’s defence is for a left-footed centre-back to partner Pau Cubarsi, providing the natural balance.

Romero, however, is right-footed, which means he would not address that particular need.

In reality, the Argentine would be better suited as a replacement for Ronald Araujo, another right-footed centre-back, rather than as the ideal complement to Cubarsi.

Signing Romero to fill that role would make little sense, particularly if it came at the expense of a defender who occupies the same position.

If Barcelona are serious about strengthening at the back, a more logical target would be someone like Aymeric Laporte.

The Spaniard is also a World Cup finalist and winner who excelled throughout the tournament, forming a formidable partnership alongside Cubarsi in the heart of the Spain defence.

Laporte is left-footed, making him a far more natural fit for what Barcelona actually require.
